In December 1999, The Times (the venerable London broadsheet newspaper) gained a real exclusive: it commissioned Lara Croft to return to the tomb of Tutenkhamen and unearth a treasure that Howard Carter had overlooked in his legendary explorations of the 1920s. This is the story of that adventure.
The level opens in the office of The Times' Editor. Lara is looking unimpressed as Peter Stothard takes her through a seies of reports from his Egyptian correspondent. It seems that the correspondent has discovered a series of new tunnels near the site of Tutenkhamen's pyramid. Despite Lara's busy schedule she allows herself to be persuaded to visit the Times' archives. In them, her researches through the original papers from Howard Carter lead her to believe that a trip to Egypt could be worthwhile after all...
Egypt, soon afterwards: the camera pans a room with a large statue holding a burner. Then Lara arrives, sliding down a series of long ramps. When Lara gets down to the floor and control returns, turn around so that she is facing away from the statues. Light a flare and go into the opening in the left corner. At the end of the passage, the ceiling opens and Lara can through, grab a ledge and haul herself up.
Crawl through the low opening and then climb several large blocks up the right hand side of the room. When you reach the base of the ramp, climb onto it and enter the alcove on the right. This is Secret #1 - the shotgun and some wideshot shells. Exit the alcove, climb back down the blocks and then slide down the ramp back to the floor.
Head down the ramp between the two statues. As you walk between the columns two red scorpions emerge. They're easy shots for your pistols, as are the second two towards the far end of the room. At the end of the room, go into the next and drop into the shallow pit in the middle to pick up a small medikit and flares. Climb out and head through the door between the statues.
Climb onto either of the side ledges as soon as you can and go down the short ramp at the end. Anything to avoid the short set of steps! As you reach the lower floor level, a very spiked ball drops down from the ceiling and rolls down the steps into the the next room. Return to the top of the steps and take a running jump from the side ledge to section of the higher ledges at the end of each row of jackal statues.
Collect wideshot shells from one ledge and Uzi clips from the other. Now go through to where the spiked ball ended up. Notice the odd looking section of floor here and then continue to the right and up the stairs. At the top of the stairs, explore each of the ledges behind the high walls flanking the staircase. Here you'll find a large medikit, wideshot shells, a small medikit and arrows. Light flares to find them in the dark.
Climb onto each wall next to the staircase in turn and use your pistols to shoot the lions' heads mounted on the walls at the end of the ledges. When both heads shatter, a trapdoor opens in the floor to the left of the big golden statue (as you face it). Drop into this opening and follow the passage to the end. Climb onto the ledge and then up the ladder.
At the top you'll find Secret #2 - a small room containing the crossbow and a quiver full of arrows. Return to the main treasure room the way you came. When you exit from the tunnel, head to the left side of the room where there's a the golden large vase blocking the entrance to the ledge flanking the left side of the staircase. This vase is moveable.
Pull it backwards along the floor until it is positioned over the coloured tile near the pile of gold. A cut scene will sho you a block rising from the floor in the room below. And the jackal statues coming to life! When control returns, take out the jackals as quickly as possible (use the shotgun for best results). Run down the staircase and jump/climb onto the top of the block - there are more jackals around!
These jackals pose no danger while you're on top of the block - you can put them out of their misery using pistols. Take a standing jump from the top of the block to grab the edge of the small opening high on the wall. Crawl into the crawlspace and follow it until Lara can stand. Light a flare and then continue down the hall past two alcoves containing sleeping mummies. As you round the next bend a cut scene shows you these mummies, along with a third just ahead, coming to life.
You can't kill the mummies, so just run past the third one towards the light at the end of the tunnel. Once you're in the next room they won't follow. Go to the left of the wide pillar and approach the water. There are three crocodiles in the pool and the nearest one might be very near indeed! Make the area safe and then shoot the large vases on either side of the wide pillar. One's empty but the other contains a loaded revolver.
Jump into the pool and turn around to swim into the underwater alcove under the wide pillar. In the roof of this alcove is a T-shaped switch than Lara can pull by getting right under it (press [Action]). The switch opens a gate at the end of the pool. Swim across, climb out of the water on the ledge and go around to jump for the edge of the new opening. Pull up and follow the hall and stairs down to the next room.
This room contains several ceramic jars and a couple of treasure chests. Some of the jars contain treasure and some contain nasty biting beetles. Luckily, if you break a jar containing beetles you can run back to where you entered this room and stand on the grating in the floor - the beetles will fall through the grating and Lara will be safe. The treasure jars contain revolver ammo and a laser sight.
After smashing all the jars, jump for the edge of the ledge running around the room and pull up to it (watching out for the flames of the burning lamps). One of the ceramic jars on this level is empty but the others contain revolver ammo and a small medikit. When you've cleared the room of all the goodies, drop back to the lower floor and find the large gold vase in one corner. Slide this out of the way and go up the stairs behind it.
On the landing, shoot the first two vases to get more revolver ammo and some flares. The third jar contains a scorpion you can use for target practice. Continue down the other set of stairs to a large room with a deep, wide pit in the middle. To cross it you need to fill it with sand by shooting either or both of the lions' heads mounted high on the wall.
Using the inventory, combine the laser sight with either the crossbow or the revolver and use the resulting weapon (using [Look] to target it) to shoot the heads. With sand pouring into the pit, Lara will be able to cross safely but you've also woken up two mummies on the far side.
Dodge past them and run up the right hand side of the wide section of the stairs. Where they narrow, go to the left (across the doorway) and a spiked ball will roll harmlessly past you. When it's rolled past, go through the doorway and duck into the alcove on the left to avoid a second ball. Continue to the room at the top and go in far enough to cause the gate behind you to close, preventing the mummies from following.
Take the gold mask from the pedestal at the top of the stairs. A gate opens to the right. Enter it and run up the stairs. A swarm of biting beetles lies in wait in the corridor at the top of the stairs - head for either of the two alcoves in the middle and stand on the grate in the floor. The beetles will follow and fall through the holes.
When the coast is clear, find the trapdoor in the ceiling near the end of the room furthest from the stairs and position Lara under it facing the wall side wall with the stairs on her left. Jump and grab the switch to open the trapdoor above. Now jump and grab the edge of the ledge and haul up. Follow the stairs up towards the light to finish the level.
