Egypt: 1999. All grown up now, Lara and her guide trek across the desert through a sandstorm. They're lucky: the storm has revealed more of the ruins that the guide first noticed on a routine trek weeks ago and which excited Lara enough for her to insist on setting out when wiser travellers would have waited for better weather. Luckily, the treacherous winds seem to have kept other treasure seekers away...
While your eyes adjust to the cave darkness the resourceful guide has noticed the torches that line the passage and begun lighting them. Before following him, check out the area around the grating in the floor and retrieve two sets of flares. Follow the guide and pick up the shotgun lying in a dip in the floor. In the next dip there's a large medikit, but it's protected by a scorpion that you'll need to take care of quickly.
To the left of this dip in the ground is a rock ledge (with a burning torch attached) - climb onto this ledge and head up it into the darkeness for some shotgun shells. Return to the ground and continue following the guide and jumping in the dips in the ground to scare up scorpions. Suddenly, you get a vision of an attack... it's a dog and easily taken care of, but things are made harder if you fall in the nearby wide pit, as it's the home of another scorpion. And there's yet another in a deep pit on your left.
When things have settled down a bit, cross the wide pit into a side chamber of the cave and find a high ledge in the cave wall. Climb up for Secret #1 - a small medikit. Go back into the main cave to find an exit door with a huge carved bird, a large medikit on a sloping rock just in front, and a small medikit in a dark depression to the right of the doorway.
Head through the door, down the slope to meet up with the guide again. Take out the scorpions that attack as you approach the guide and notice that the entrance door has clanged shut. Look in the dark corners of the room for two sets of flares and note the three small holes in the wall, but don't approach them yet. Head out through a side door to a room below with a deep sandpit. There's a small medikit on the plinth in the corner of the pit and Secret #2 - shotgun shells - in the alcove in the corner, A scorpion harasses you when you get the secret. Return upstairs.
Have a grope inside the three small holes now (press [action] when standing in front of them). One reveals a large medikit and a second releases sand into the room below. The third disappoints. Head back downstairs and walk across the sand to pick up the eye piece and the small medikit. This opens a door upstairs and allows the guide to get a head start on you... chase after him.
The guide heads down the stairs to the left of the tomb but you should clamber on top and jump for the rope. Adjust your angle to face the door high up in the wall and set the rope swinging. Jump off the rope and land on the high ledge. This is Secret #3, but don't get excited just yet...! Jump, grab and hang off the right hand ledge and just look around using the [view] keys. You should soon notice an evil looking set of blades rotating over your head. After they've gone past haul up and run (and jump) to the ledge on the right hand side of the cave in front of you. Pick up the small medikit.
Flatten yourself against the wall and turn around. On the other side of the cave you can see the entrance to an ornate room. You need to get there, but you have to do it the hard way... When the blade has gone over your head again, jump and grab the ledge above you and haul up. Turn left and do a long running jump across the path of the blade to a ledge opposite. Hug the wall and then climb up to the top of the next ledge and pick up some flares. This area is safe from the blades so wait for them to go past and then go over the crest of the ledge and (making sure you're on the left hand side) turn around and safety drop backwards to a half hidden ledge below.
From here, when the coast is clear, you can take a running jump into the ornate room. Follow the passage and kill three dogs that attack when you round the corner. Slide backwards down the ramp and grab onto the end. Note the pit with the scorpions and drop onto safe ground. Pick up the Uzis (PSX - I'm told it's only shotgun shells). You can't lock on the scorpions so they live to scuttle another day and you have to safety drop down the other hole to find yourself between the two sandy rooms. Head up the passage and back to the rope room.
Go down the stairs and meet the guide just in time for him to show you a party trick. Not pleasant...! To avoid meeting a rather messy fate, cross the floor carefully, avoiding the squares coloured black. Pick up the second eye piece and return using the same amount of care... Combine the eye pieces and exit the room, heading left. Set into the end of an alcove in the cave wall is a receptacle for the combined eye pieces - filling it opens a spectacular door and, as usual, the guide rushes through first.
Good for him - he will probably make short work of the two dogs that attack you both. Shoot any that get away from him and head up stairs in his wake. After a short cut scene you can take in the splendour of the huge sphinx room. The guide has disappeared down the left hand set of steps. Before following him, pick up the Uzi clips and the small medikit from the two areas behind the steps on the right and left. Now go to the bottom of the left hand set of steps and rejoin the guide in a room with oil on all sides of the floor. You know it's oil because the guide lights it...
Follow him through a long a winding tunnel, going past a green passage on your right. There's a locked gate at the end, so return to that passage and drop in. Pick up the small medikit and continue to a room with more oil and a statue. Head into a reddish passage and follow it until you reach a room with hieroglyphics on the floor. Note the two gates you pass on the final corner.. Pull the chain in front of you to release the guide and let him light up the oil in the room below. (This also switches the two gates behind you). Light from the lower room bursts through some of the hieroglyphs on the floor in front of you.
Turn round and head for the small room downstairs. Pick up the shotgun (shells) and pull the chain here to reset the gates above, then return upstairs. You need to cross the room by jumping to each of the lit up hieroglyphs in turn. Stepping outside the lit floor tile will mean you having to go back downstairs, reset the puzzle with the chain and start again. You can make all the jumps with simple leaps, provided you position Lara carefully before each jump. Each successful jump lights up a torch on the wall opposite. When the task is complete the door opposite will open, revealing the Timeless Sands, which you should pick up to open the exit door.
Outside, you find yourself at the bottom of the sphinx. After a bit of persuasion the guide will come out and head off down the left side of the sphinx and into a passage. Go past the passage entrance and climb up a long ladder to a cave on the sphinx's shoulder. Flip the switch here to open the door to a scret below, but before heading for that secret, get the much trickier one from the other side of the sphinx...
Walk out onto the sphinx's golden shoulder and peer round to see the nose on his face. Line up and take a simple jump from the shoulder to the nose and then take a similar jump from the nose to the opposite shoulder. Walk into the cave here for Secret #4 - shotgun shells and a large medikit. There's no ladder here, so return to the other side of the sphinx and descend the ladder to ground level. Just before the ground is the door you opened above to Secret #5 - two types of shotgun shell (PSX - I'm told there's nothing here!).
Head down the passage to meet up with the guide again. He reads the inscription overhead and panics, leaving Lara on her own - just as she likes it! Enter the passage and take out three scorpions before going on to the chamber itself. Pick up the shotgun shells and then climb up to the statue and place the Timeless Sands in it's hands. This causes massive amounts of sand to fall into this chamber from the sphinx room, uncovering the sphinx's mouth.
Return to the sphinx room, killing any stray scorpions, and climb into the mouth of the sphinx. continue to the end of the level.
