Level 29 - Citadel

The start of the level finds LAra in a wide, dark hallway. Go forward for a cut scene: Lara finally discovers Jean-Yves looking a little the worse for wear, tied to a large pillar. Jean-Yves brings Lara up to date with Von Croy's plans and they embrace before Jean-Yves escapes and Lara prepares to go on alone...

Go through the patterned columns to the left of where Jean-Yves was tied up, into a very similar looking room beyond. Do you best to cross the room with only an overhead camera view to help and go through the next set of columns into a dark room. Go up the stairs in the corner to a room with a lever and lit torches. Use the lever to open the gold door back in the first room and pick up the wooden torch lying in one of the alcoves. Light it carefully on the nearby burning torch.

Return downstairs to the second room where the camera goes funny. From the camera's point of view, head Lara to the right, where there's a low ledge that she'll need to jump onto as she can't vault while holding the torch. Landing on the ledge will probably cause the torch to set fire to the rope above the ledge - if not, walk Lara under it until it starts to burn. When the rope burns through, a section of floor drops away in the first room.

Discard the burning torch and return to the room where you found Jean-Yves. Pick up some Uzi clips from behind the gold door and then drop into the pit nearby. Follow the tunnel to an alcove on the left containing wideshot shells. Then continue on to an opening high up inside a room with a pool at the bottom and several staircases on the walls.

As you approach this room, you see one of Von Croy's men run up some stairs to guard a lever. Take a standing jump diagonally to the left to the top of a staircase. Jump from here to the flat ledge that separates the two halves of the room. Ahead you can see a large medikit but it's in a booby trapped corridor so ignore it for now. Instead, take a running jump from the ledge, across the second half of the room to the bottom of the stairs on the opposite wall (that appear to lead nowehere).

Go to the top of these steps and jump to grab the monkey swing in the roof. Turn left (while facing the wall) and swing along the wall to an opening. Position Lara up against the wall, just above the opening and let go of the roof, grabbing again immediately to catch hold of the edge of the crawlspace. Crawl in for Secret #1 - a large medikit and flash grenades. Climb out of the crawlspace and drop into the pool below.

Swim through the underwater opening into the other half of the room and pick up some super grenades from and underwater ledge. Climb out of the water on the long ledge nearby and take a running jump to grab the block step across the way. From here you can climb to where you entered the room.

Stand on the ledge between the two halves of the room and face the larger half. At the left hand edge of the ledge, drop back and grab the edge. Make sure Lara is as leftwards as she'll go and drop from the edge to grab the crevice just below. Shimmy right and go around the corner. Stop as soon as Lara has gone around the corner and drop to the next crevice below. Shimmy right around two more corners and pull up into a crawlspace.



Crawl through and out the other side, dropping into a shallow pool. Pick up the Uzi clips and climb into the second crawlspace beyond. Drop out of this one backwards onto a slope and grab the end of it as you slide off. Haul up and immediately jump backwards onto another angled block. Hold [jump] as you land on this one and Lara will jump off forwards, allowing you to grab a crack in the wall ahead.

Shimmy left and pull up into an alcove for a small medikit. Turn around and take a running jump to grab the bottom of the stairs opposite. Haul up and immediately draw some weapons to take out the bad guy at the top. Continue up the stairs and take out another bad guy at the final landing (the one you saw running when you entered the room).

At the top of the stairs, go up the ramp on the right. Turn around when you reach the lever and take out a third bad guy trying to jump you from behind. Then use the lever to deactivate the fire trap in the hallway below. Safety drop through the hole to the left of the lever (you'll lose some health here - drop into the pool and climb up if that's a problem). Pick up the large medikit and continue along the hall and down the stairs.

As you enter the next room you are treated to an aerial view, showing the compass pattern in the floor. Walk Lara around the edge of the room, keeping to the raised ledge, and pick up grenades, super grenades and a small medikit in three of the corners. Now head onto the floor and check out the four tables. Each table has a letter engraved in it, representing the four points of the compass. The floor has four places marked on it for these tables to go. Naturally, the tables need to go on the correct compass points.

You can check your own compass for orientation, but the door you entered from is at the south. Place the table marked 'S' first as it gets trapped if you leave it. When all four tables are correctly placed the three closed doors open. Go through the West door first and follow the ramp down to a room with a stone ledge. Climb onto the ledge and hop into a pit at the side to get some flares. Climb back out and drop through the trapdoor into a pool below.

Three underwater tunnels lead out of this room: one at floor level and two higher up their walls. There are two trapdoors and a large pipe on the floor. Follow the tunnel opposite the one with the floor level entrance and swim through the corridor to a room with a switch in the centre of the ceiling. Position Lara just below it and press [actin] to have her pull it. It closes the trapdoor you jumped through to get into the previous room.

There's a small medikit in the corner of the room with the ceiling switch but you'll probably have to swim back to the first room for air before returning to collect it. Back in the room with the three underwater tunnels, swim through the floor level entrance and continue on until you reach a room with a chain where you can climb out. Pick up the revolver ammo in one corner of this room and follow the ramp back up to the compass room, emerging through the North door.

Go through the East door and follow the ramp down to a room with two bad guys guarding a lever. Kill the goons and use the lever to lower the water level in the underwater section. Go back to the compass room, through the North door and to the room with the chain. Jump into the water and swim back to the room with the underwater passages. The two higher passage entrances are now above the waterline, so surface and climb into the one on the right (above one end of the underwater pipe).



Go to the end of the tunnel and push the lever there. This opens the two trapdoors in the floor of the previous room revealing drains that cause the water level to drop further. Go back there, pick up some Uzi clips from one of the drains and follow the underwater tunnel back to the room with the chain (part of this tunnel is now above the water). Kill the bad guy patrolling the room room and pull the chain to open a door in one of the walls.

Go through the open door and follow the tunnel to a crawlspace. On the other side of this crawlspace you'll get a cut scene showing two undead knights heading towards Lara. When control returns, don't panic! The room has a wooden platform and a very deep pit near where you enter. Avoid the pit and avoid the knights and climb onto the wooden platform.

You could also find the wooden ramp in a corner of the room and follow it to the top of the platform. Even if you don't do that, the knights do. This is a good(ish) thing as you need them to break through the wooden barricade at the top of the platform. Stand near it, facing it, and when one of the knights swings at Lara the barricade will break. Run through and climb up the ledge on the right to safety.

Continue on and explore the upper area of the huge cave beyond to find Uzi clips and flares. Now drop into the lower area and look for a small, deep hole in the ground near a wall. Don't go near the pulsating blue light for now. Face the wall near the deep pit and then go around to the left side of the it. Drop back and grab the edge. Now let go and immediately grab again to find a crawlspace.

Crawl inside and follow the tunnel to the end. Climb onto a ledge for Secret #2. Unfortunately, the secret goodies are in the room above, guarded by two more lumbering undead knights. If you haul up into the room, you can easily get hold of all the goodies (explosive arrows, flash grenades, revolver ammo, wideshot shells and a large medikit) in one or two runs, dropping back into the pit for safety if required.

While collecting the goodies, avoid the ramp in one corner of the room as it's a one way exit. Use it when you've collected everything and slide down to the upper level of the large cave. Hop down into the lower area and head towards the pulsating blue light to end the level and meet up with Von Croy again. This time (joy of joys!) Lara gets the best of the encounter and escapes with the ankh that she lost absolutely ages ago. But the adventure continue...
