Level 24 - Citadel Gate

You start this level in the dark. Go forward and don't panic as the camera abandons you - just run over the drop and into the alley below. Note the soldier lying on the far end of the ledge ahead - he's still breathing! Approach him for a cut scene of some significance.

Sgt Azizus has some revolver ammo near him and he won't mind if you take it. Follow the street around a couple of corners until the camera pans away from you, revealing a huge fire breathing dragon - scary! You're probably standing at one corner of the dragon's square. Opposite the dragon is the ammunition truck Sgt Azizus spoke of. Opposite Lara is a short street with a set of columns along a low wall and on the other side of the dragon is a street heading off into the distance. For now, head into the street with the columns, where you're safe from the dragon's fireballs.

Pick up the grenades and a small medikit from the end of the alley and then return to the entrance. If you start sprinting from the very end of the low wall when the dragon has just released a set of fireballs at you, you can make it through the archway on the other side of the dragon without getting fried - go for it!

Just beyond the gateway on the other side of the dragon search for a crawlspace high on the right hand wall. Don't panic if you're attacked by a swarm of locusts, just jump for and climb into the crawlspace, reverse into a dark passage and collect arrows, flares and a large medikit as you run through it. Use medikits to heal the bites of the locusts and then climb out of the crawlspace at the other end of the passage and drop into the street opposite the alley where you're safe from the dragon...

...but not the locusts! Run back to Sgt Azizus and the locusts should disperse as you reach the clothes line. Don't go too close to the Sergeant or you will get a cut sene slightly out of context. Deal with any stray bats that got scared up by your recent adventure. Now return to the dragon square and make another run across the front of the dragon to the street at the other side. This time, continue along the street around a few corners and expect another locust swarm to attack you along the way. Keep going until you reach another clothes line strung across the street, at which point the locusts will disperse again.

If you continue along the street you'll come to a deep pit. That blocks the way at the moment, so backtrack along the street towards the dragon until you see a low wall on the left. Climb over the wall into a short alley. Advance down the alley with a weapon at the ready because there are crocodiles about! Take out the first near the end of the alley and then go a little closer to the wall to bring out a second. Light a flare, crouch down and crawl into their lair to retrieve poison arrows and revolver ammo.

Crawl back out and walk down the alley until the wall on the left drops away to allow you to climb up. From the ledge, survey the room beyond carefully: there's two coffins on the floor below and three switches at floor level opposite you. A fourth switch is much higher, in an alcove on the left wall. High up in front of you are two bells in alcoves and higher still are two tiled sections of walls(one hidden by a crate).

Use an explosive arrow to drop the crate to one side. The two tiled sections of wall can now be seen to be a clue to the switches in the room. Switch the switches corresponding to the symbols on the tops of the coffins and the coffin concerned will move. Surprisingly, the puzzle is even easier to solve than that as the switches don't reset and if you switch all four in one go the coffins will both be moved out of the way.

Drop down into the room with the coffins and receive a panoramic view of the area. Cross the room and switch all the switches at the far side (which will move one coffin). Cross back over the room and go to the far right corner, where the floor is a little higher. Jump from here to grab the ledge leading to the alcove with the fourth switch. Haul up and switch that switch to move the second coffin.

Drop back down to floor level and drop into the hole beneath the coffin on the right. Use the crowbar to operate the lever here, which opens a door in the hole by the second coffin. Climb out of the first hole and into the second. Use the switch here to open the door in the wall near where you jumped into this area. A swarm of locusts is also released, so climb back to floor level as fast as possible.

Go through the door you just opened, killing a couple of bats that were roosting, and follow the sloping passage. More locusts set upon you near the top, but they eventually fly away. At the top of the sloping passage you're treated to another panoramic cut scene. When control returns, take a running jump and grab the rope dangling ahead. Drop down to the bottom of the rope and turn through almost 180 degrees to face the alcove containing the bell on the right (below the hanging box).

Line up a swing aiming just to the right of the hanging box and make sure you've got a really high arc before jumping off the rope. Press [action] as you fly through the air and you should land in the alcove with the bell. Drop back and grab the edge of the opening and then drop and grab again to make it to the entrance of a crawlspace. Haul up and crawl in for Secret #1 - a large medikit and explosive arrows.

Crawl back out of the crawlspace and drop to the ground. Return to the door near the first coffin and go up the sloping passage a second time, expecting to be eaten alive by locusts once more. Take a running jump to grab the rope again. This time, swing out across the coffin area, aiming to land on a ledge directly opposite you, attached to a building on the far side of the crocodile alley.

Turn left when you land and take a running jump to the striped awaning. Take a standing jump-grab to the wooden dormer roof along the alley and then turn and kill a giant flying insect that sneaks up behind you. Take a running jump across the street to another striped awning in the corner to the left. Turn right and take a standing jump to grab the ladder on the opposite side of the street. Climb around the corner to the left and drop to the ledge below.

Turn around and take a standing jump to grab the ledge on the opposite side of the street. Pull up and draw your weapons to take out another flying insect. Look across the street to the left of the ladder you just descended - there's a crevice which you can just make if you take a running jump-grab on a slight left diagonal (or you can use the overhead monkey bars). At the crevice, traverse left until you can climb into the higher section and pick up the small medikit. Crawl out and drop to the ledge below.

Turn around and take a running jump to the striped awning across the street to your right and from there, take another running jump to grab the sqauer opening in the wall ahead. Pull up and enter. Follow this passage to emerge above a deep pit (the same pit that prevented progress at the end of the previous street).

Position Lara with her right shoulder against the right side of the opening. Sidestep one pace to the left and then turn her 45 degrees to the right. Hop back and take a running jump into the void, bearing slightly right to land on the wide ledge on the far side of the deep pit - where there's a truck on fire. Immediately draw a weapon and take out the two giant insects that fly in. Be careful not to fall into the pit or stray too close to the flames at one end of the burning lorry.

Walk around the left side of the truck and carefully retrieve the canister of nitrous oxide (which is mislabelled!). From the edge of the ledge, take a running jump across the pit and then clamber up the other side towards the wrecked taxi. Follow the street back through the plague of locusts to the gateway leading to the dragon sqare. Either sprint across the front of the dragon or climb into the crawlspace and use the locust infested passage to make it to the other side of the square and then follow the streets to return to poor Sgt Azizus.

Climb over the ledge to receive the seond cut scene, where he will explain the use of the nitrous oxide. When he's done, climb back into the passage leading to the Chambers of Tulun and run through to the end. In the Chambers, you'll likely be knocked off the ladder leading down to the ground by the Minotaur's hammer blows. Pick yourself up and follow the passage at the base of the ladder to a block that you can jump for, grab, haul up and slide down the other side to street level.

Remembering the Minotaur, sprint along the street to the left and round the corner. Run along the street to the lowered section where you left the motorbike and climb aboard. Drive through the archway and up the hill into the next level.
