Having trekked back to Alexandria from the site of Cleopatra's Palace, Lara is distressed to find Jean-Yves' study ransacked and her friend missing. A knife pins a note to Jean-Yves' desk in which Lara finds that Jean-Yves is a prisoner of Von Croy. She takes her friend's motorbike and gives chase...
Out in the desert an Egyptian Air Force unit is tracking Von Croy's column. A plague of locusts forms around the column and, as we see Von Croy beginning to turn into Set, the locusts take off and destroy the helicopter flight by flying into their air intakes.
Lara makes it to the Cairo city walls beside the wreck of one of the helicopters. Gunfire in the city confirms her worst suspicions but even she cannot imagine the true horrors that lie in wait...
You begin the level by the motorbike and under fire. Run across the street towards the right hand side of the purple columned building on the left. Here there's a ledge with a gunman on top. Take him out and climb up to find a revolver. There's a second gunman on the roof of the building you're standing next to. Separate the laser sight from the crossbow and combine it with the revolver. Now run out into the street and past the motorbike to the safety of the tall wrought iron gate beyond.
Step out from here and sidestep until you get a clear shot at the rooftop sniper. Don't worry too much if he starts chucking grenades at you - they're not very effective! Take him out with a shot to the head. Before leaving the gate look up at one of the side walls and note the black switch high above. We'll be back to operate that later!
Now walk down the middle of the street. A little way beyond the motorbike Lara will take aim at something ahead and to the right: a machine gun! Use the revolver and aim for the top of the structure until it explodes. Climb back on the bike and head towards the T-junction where the machine gun was. Turn right and run over the first soldier. There's another at the corner beyond, but he's behind a sloping wall and you can't get to him. Drive on around the corner to the left.
Head for the building with the X shaped wooden barricades on a ledge and turn right just in front of it to find two more soldiers. Run over them on the bike and then dismount and pick up the shotgun shells that one of them drops. Now walk back up the street to take out the gunman behind the sloping wall that you couldn't get to before.
Just beyond where you probably stopped the motorbike is a pile of sand and beyond that is a short dead end alley with a block in one corner. Lara may target a machine gun on the roof of the building to the left but it's broken and safe. Drive the motorbike down the alley and turn around. Now motor over the sand hill, turning slightly to the right at the top and jump onto the ledge of the building with the wooden barricades (the nearest part of the ledge has a slight slope to make it easier to land on).
Crash through the barricades and drive into the far right corner of the building where there's an unstable floor. Fall through and drive into the room below. Follow the room around a U-turn to the left and crash through the wall ahead and back into the street. Dismount and walk back inside to pick up a small medikit at the U-turn. Climb into the brick alcove nearby and drop into the pool below. Climb out of the water and follow the passageway past the torch to the next room.
Heading into the room through the columns disturbs several bats that are tricky to kill between the arches. When all is clear, go to the far wall and pick up flares and wideshot shells from the two corners. There's a ramp in the middle of one of the other walls - slide down it to land in a square hallway with a dead soldier. Pick up the laser sight near the soldier (though you already have it!) and run around the square to take stock of the area.
There's a closed door in one corner and a set of stairs in one wall. There's also a crevice in the corner beyond the dead soldier: jump to grab it and then traverse to the right to a spot where you can pull up. Turn around to face a ledge with a jar and a swinging blue ball. The jar contains a swarm of locusts that you really don't want to disturb, so use the revolver and take careful aim at the blue ball as it swings to one side.
When it smashes it releases two ice elementals. Jump down off the ledge and head around to the right along the passage until you get to the stairs. Run up the stairs, which turn to the left, and over the lip at the top to slide down into a pool. The ice elementals follow you and extinguish themselves in the water. Swim down through the underwater passage to a ledge where you can climb out. Then safety drop back down the other side into the square hallway. Return to the stairs and head back up them to the pool.
The ice elementals have turned the water into ice, so Lara can walk across to the alcove opposite where there's a lever. Pull this to open the door in the corner of the square hallway and then return downstairs and exit this area through that door. Follow the ramp to a hallway with several lit torches. Go all the way into the room and check the alcove at the far right for a small medikit. Backtrack to the first alcove near the entrance and use the crowbar to force open the blue wooden door. This is Secret #1 - a large medikit and Uzi clips.
Climb the block steps near the blue door. Keep climbing until Lara refuses to pull up - this is a crawlspace, so crawl in and through to emerge high above the area where you started this level. Crawl out backwards and hang from the ledge. Traverse to the right until the crevice becomes high enough for you to pull up. Turn around and take a running jump to the black switch opposite, using [action] to grab onto it. Lara's weight will pull the switch down, opening the tall wrought iron gate and dropping her to the ground.
Draw your guns and take out the soldier with the grenade launcher on the other side of the gate. Take his medikit and then backtrack through the streets of Cairo to return to your motorcycle. Ride the bike up the sandhill and to the left under the washing line. Two machine guns open up on you so drive as fast as you can to the wall at the end of this street, where you're safe.
Dismount and run to the left (sticking close to the wall) to find an alcove. Here you'll find a small medikit and a grenade launcher. Return to the motorbike and continue on, crossing the street and running through gunfire to the building with the broken pillars in front. Hop onto the ledge whilst running and press [action] to open the door beyond the pillars. Enter the building and patch yourself up with a medikit.
There's a dead soldier at the back of this building. Stand Lara by his head and drag him along the floor off the grating he was lying on. You can't climb into the crawlspace above the grating, so exit this building and dodge the gunfire to get back to the motorbike. Climb on and hightail it back down the street you drove down earlier to the sandpile (whee the shooting stops). Turn left into the short alley and dismount.
Climb up the block and crawl into the opening beyond. Drop down twice and follow the passage to a small room with a lever and a small medikit. Use the lever to open the grating the dead soldier was lying on. Climb up through the opening in the roof and turn right around on the edge of the ledge. Now take a standing jump to grab the edge of the crawlspace above and climb in.
Crawl through and go up the ramp to a second lever. Use this to open the door above the wrought iron grate overhead. Return all the way back to the motorbike and fire her up to drive through the deserted streets to the big wrought iron gate where you started this level. Drive through this and head to the left into a pit in the street. Drive on into a building with several staircases.
Firstly, head downstairs to the basement where there's a sodier you can run over. Pick up the poison arrows from the crawlspace on the nearby ledge and return upstairs. Ride all the way to the top of the stairs (several flights), where you'll find a small ramp and an opening that leads out into the street. Take a run up at the ramp and jump the bike into the opening with the sloped entrance opposite. Dismount near the lit torch and walk up the ramp to the second lit torch.
Kill a couple of bats roosting inside the alcove on the left and pull the lever to raise a block downstairs. Return to the bike and ride up the steep ramp by the second lit torch to return to the stairwell. On the landing below you'll see the block you just raised. Leave the bike, go down to the block, climb onto it and climb again into the passage above. Continue on to an opening above the street facing the white building with the broken machine gun.
Take a running jump across the gap to grab the edge of the white building. Haul up and pick up some revolver ammo next to the machine gun. Nearby is the door you opened from below a while ago but don't rush through - just across the street beyond are the two very active machine guns that are covering the long street near the sand hill! Combine the crossbow with the laser sight and look throughthe sight. Just above and between the machine guns is a parked helicopter. Shoot at it's rotors and it will explode, taking the machine guns with it.
Now take a running jump from the jutting ledge to grab the edge of the ledge on the next building. Make your way over to where the helicopter was and pick up a small medikit on the ground to the left. Use the nearby lever to open a gate at street level. Retrace your steps across the rooftops to the ledge with the broken machine gun on the previous building. From there, take a running jump to the opening opposite, using [action] to lower Lara's trajectory a little. She'll land inside and you can follow the passage back into the building with the stairwell where you can return to your bike.
Get back on the bike, drive up to the top level and turn right at the ramp where you jumped the bike earlier. Go through the opening that leads back to the street (the dead end near the sand hill). Head out of the alley and turn right. At the end of the street turn right again and then left. Continue on through the open gate and drive up the hill to the next level.
You re-enter the City from the Chambers of Tulun. Ride through the tall iron gates into the streets beyond and turn right. Follow the road across the front of the building that had the two machine guns on the roof and continue around a couple of corners bearing leftwards. Dismount and kill the soldier on the ledge who starts sniping at you.
Just beyond where the soldier was is a steep downward slope. Drive the bike down this and turn the corner to run over another soldier. There's now a very steep slope upwards with a nasty camber on the left. Beyond is a very deep pit. Back the bike right up to the wall opposite the deep pit (so you'll be driving down a slope before heading uphill), aiming for the very left hand side of the steep slope.
Now speed downhill, with nitro boost, and if you get the line right Lara will jump the pit and land safely in a cutout on the far side. If you hesitate, go too slow or bump the left hand wall, the camber on the slope will force you to the right and Lara will crash and burn...
If you land safely, wheel around to the right and run over a surprised soldier standing nearby. Then pootle over to the ledge with the short wooden columns and dismount. Cimb onto the ledge and head for the dip behind the large one on the left. Note the series of angled columns that surrounds the dip (look upwards and around to check them out).
With your back to the wooden pillar, go forwards and to the left into an alcove behind one of the sloped columns. Now jump and grab the lower edge of the column and shimmy so Lara's hanging from the middle. Pull up and jump as soon as Lara stands up. Keep jumping (hold the [jump] key) as Lara springs around several columns and ends up in a gap in the wall. Hop down into the area below for Secret #2 - super grenades, a large medikit and explosive arrows.
Climb back out of this alley the way you came in and safety drop into the pit. Climb out and return to the motorbike. Jump the bike back across the deep pit using the nitro boost at the left hand side where there's an upward slope. The jump is much easier this time! Return up the hill to the left and along the street to the tall iron gates that lead to the Chambers of Tulun. Drive on.
In Chambers, drive down the hill and round to the right. Follow the road to the edge of the deep pit and jump over it on the left hand side. Continue along the road and around the corner to the archway leading to the Trenched level. Drive back into the Trenches.
Head right from the entrance to the Trenches and park the bike near the palm tree. Go on foot up the street nearby that leads through an archway to some steps beyond. Near the steps you'll see an alcove on each side of the street. Climb into the one on the left and get a large medikit. Cross over the street to the other alcove, trying to ignore the sniper fire.
The sniper is on the rooftops above the first alcove but very difficult to hit, so just go to the right hand edge of the alcove ledge (not onto the lower section) and jump for and grab the handle in the roof. This opens a trapdoor above the lower part of the alcove, revealing a crawlspace.
Climb into the crawlspace and drop into the room beyond. Pick up the poison arrows and go through the next crawlspace to an opening above where you left the motorbike. Around 45 degrees to the right as you emerge is a grey box blocking the crevice to your right. Kneel, draw your pistols and swivel towards the box to shatter it.
Drop backwards off the crawlspace to grab the edge and then shimmy leftwards along the crevice and around the corner. Drop off the crevice to a ledge when you reach it. Use the overhead bars to monkey swing across the street to an opening in the opposite building - ignoring the swarm of locusts which torment you as you go.
Go into the corridor carefully, as you're ambushed by a soldier around the corner. Pick up the small medikit that he drops and then go around to the right and find the closed doors near then end of the roof bay. Stand close to the doors and use the roof key you found in Chambers to open them. Go through to another ledge above the street.
Take a running jump to grab the horizontal crevice opposite, to the right of the balcony. Shimmy left under the balcony and climb up to another ledge when you can. Go through the passage and climb up the block to a shoulder height opening. The sniper from earlier on should turn up on the other side and can be despatched by shooting his legs.
You can now peer through the opening to see an electrical box across the street. Hit the red light on it with a single arrow from your crossbow and you'll see smoke appear (keep trying until the smoke appears if you miss at first). This opens a door elsewhere. Return down the passage and safety drop to the street.
Turn the motorbike around and head back along the street, past the entrance to the Chambers of Tulun and down a slope on the right to an area at the base of two sets of steps. Zoom up the left hand set, run over a soldier at the top and drive onwards to run over a second soldier standing at the base of a huge pile of sand.
There's no way up the sand from here, but over to your right is the door you opened by blasting the electrical box. Retrace your path on the bike to the base of the two sets of steps. Set up a long, straight run from the top of the hill opposite the right hand set. Zoom up the left side of the steps, through the next room and through the open door. Use the [sprint] key and you should fly over the gap, landing on top of the sand pile and coming to rest near a small door.
Dismount and climb the nearby ladder to the Street Bazaar level.
