Level 20 - Pharos, Temple of Isis

You start this level underwater in a large underground cave facinf an huge building facade. There's a hammerhead shark in here too, so swim forwards and upwards to an airhole in the ceiling of the cave, where there's a ledge you can climb out on. The shark is a tricky blighter - I gave up trying to tempt him into range of my guns and took him out with a single explosive arrow.

With the cave clear of threats, jump back in the water and swim down the facade until you reach the middle. Here there's a boarded up opening with two small passages at either side. Swim into both passage in turn to place the Pharos Knot in the receptacle in the left one and the Pharos Pillar in the receptacle in the right one.

Completing this opens a pair of wooden doors at the base of the building facade. Swim down there and enter the building, swimming forward up the underwater stairs until you can stand and wade forwards. When you reach the room at the top of the stairs a skeleton appears - use the shotgun to blow it into the pool between the two ram statues and then dive in after it.

Swim into the underwater room with three doors. Lara will open all the doors if you position her just in front of them and press [action], but only the door on the right is worth trying. Swim through and surface in the room ahead. As you climb out, a golden bird materialises to your left. If you're slow killing it, it begins shooting energy bolts at Lara and if it gets too close it will sting her with it's poisonous tail (everything goes woozy, but a medikit solves that).

The bird will go down easily enough with pistol fire, if you keep moving. When it's been dealt with shoot the four wooden benches with the coloured cushion tops (while crouching) to obtain small and large medikits, 3 boxes of shells and 3 boxes of wideshot shells. Make sure you pick everything up - light a flare and double check. Now climb up the stairs opposite the small pool where you entered the room.

At the top is an ante room with hollow benches containing Uzi clips, a large medikit, regular and wideshot shells. Fill your knapsack and then proceed into the main room, which has a pyramid in the centre. Another ornamented skeleton rises up and needs to be blown away before you can explore the room: The pyramid has four receptacles in each side - these are for beetle keys, which you'll start collecting soon. While collecting the beetle keys you'll also find some broken ones, which are useless.

In the floor of the room, against three of the walls are chutes with liquid at the bottom. The liquid is oil and when Lara lands in it (as she surely will!) she only has a few seconds to climb out before it ignites...

Standing with Lara's back to the entrance to the room, head for the chute on the right (you can skip this one if you must, but practice makes perfect!). Step into the chute and slide to the bottom. Jump out into the oil just as you get to the bottom of the slope and then wade forwards as soon as you can. Exit at the end of the channel without pausing and the oil should harmlessly ignite behind you.

Use the crowbar to pry the (broken) beetle key from the wall, releasing a horde of live beetles. Go to the left or right, onto a ledge that runs back towards the entrance of the room and jump to the base of the entrance slope - now turned into a set of block steps. Scramble up the steps to the top and the beetles will stop following you. Phew!

Now jump down the chute opposite the entrance. Jump at the bottom again and wade through the oil to the end of the channel. Climb out at the end and use the crowbar to pry the beetle key out of the wall. Climb onto the ledge that runs back towards the entrance, jump to the base of the entrance slope - now steps - and climb back to the pyramid room. Put the black beetle into one of the receptacles on the pyramid.

Now head to the last chute and drop into it. Jump at the bottom and wade through the oil, noting that the exit in this channel is to the right at the end. There is a broken beetle key in the column just to the right of the step, but ignore it - it's a trap! Instead, go to the beetle key embedded in the wall opposite the entrance slope and use the crowbar to pry it out. Walk back along the ledge, jump to the entrance and climb up the steps to the pyramid room. Place the black beetle into one of the receptacles on the pyramid.

Now exit the pyramid room through the ante chamber and return downstairs to the room with the pool in the middle. Climb the stairs on the right and enter a large room with a statue of Cleopatra at the far end. The door closes behind you. Note the high alcoves to the left and right as you walk towards the statue, and the closed trapdoor in the floor closer to the statue.

Climb onto either of the tall blocks in the corners nearest the statue. Use the crowbar to pry out the beetle, releasing a horde of live ones. Run off the block and climb up the opposite one, which is too high for the beetles to follow. Pry out the beetle here too, releasing yet more of the critters. Run off the second block and head down the room, sticking close to the wall. Prying off the beetles raised two blocks below the high alcoves, enabling you to climb up to them. Again, you'll be safe from beetle attack in these alcoves.

In the first alcove (it doesn't matter which), push the carved tile at the end. Now hop down to the block, run off it and across the room, climbing into the second alcove. Push the carved tile here too. This opens the trapdoor near the statue. Take a deep breath and run out of the alcove, into the room and head for the open trapdoor. Run straight into it and press [action] to grab the ladder inside the pit. Don't let go!

The beetles will swarm in after you and fall into the room below. Climb out of the pit and take a few steps. Now return to the pit and climb down the ladder to the block below. The beetles are now on the floor and you're safe. Check out the room from the top of the block. At the far end are two sloping columns and a flat topped one is nearer to you, on the left. Drop onto the floor of the room and run past the two closest columns to the second sloping one. Jump to grab the lower edge of this, pull up and press [jump] to backflip as soon as Lara stands up. She'll land on a ledge opposite the sloping column.

Take the Winding Key from the pedestal and push the nearby carved tile to open the exit door in the room above. Drop down from the ledge, run the length of the room and climb up the column below the pit you dropped in through. Climb the ladder to the room with Cleopatra's statue, exit the way you came in and head down the stairs to return to the room with the pool in the middle.

A decorative skeleton will materialise as you enter the pool room again - blast it into the pool and go up the stairs on the left to the pyramid room. Place the black beetle into one of the remaining receptacles. One to go!

Return to the room with the pool in the middle and go up the last staircase (on the left). A short way down the corridor you'll enter the next level - Cleopatra's Palaces. Turn the corner at the end and cast your eyes over Cleopatra's interior decorations in a cut scene.. the lady had style!

Cross the room and go through either of the doorways below the balcony. A little way down the passage, in alcoves, are three wooden benches with cushion tops. Shooting them reveals a large medikit, arrows and revolver ammo. Further on the corridor narrows and the tell-tale holes in the floor reveal a spike trap. Return to the doorway underneath the balcony.

There's a ramp leading upstairs here - go up it and shoot the bench at the top to retrieve two sets of shotgun shells. The bench near the balcony entrance is empty but when you walk out onto the balcony a skeleton appears behind you (near the ramp) and can easily be tempted to follow you outside and be blown off the balcony with the shotgun.

Go back to the ledge above the ramp and find the alcove with the carved picture of a face at the end. Use the crowbar to prise open the carved face door and go through. Follow the corridor to a second carved door and prise it open too. Beyond is a corridor leading to a room with an opening in the floor and a window covered with vines that overlooks the entrance to the main area.

Step into the hole in the floor and slide down the ramp into a pool of oil. Quickly wade down the left channel and climb out on the right at the end just before the oil catches fire. Use the crowbar to pry the beetle key out of the wall and then turn around and take a diagonal jump to the left across the channel (avoiding the overhanging block opposite). Now take a standing jump into the entrance (don't grab!) and climb up the steps where the ramp was.

Safety drop from the window overlooking the main room to the floor below. Return up the curved steps nearby to the Temple of Isis level. As you come down the stairs into the room with the small pool another golden bird materialises at the top of the middle staircase. Deal with it and then climb up the middle staircase and go through the ante room to the pyramid room. Place the beetle key into the last receptacle in the pyramid.

The pyramid opens to reveal a mechanical scarab in a flood of light. Step forward, take the scarab and then return through the ante room and down the stairs to the room with the pool. Climb the stairs on the left to return to Cleopatra's Palace.
