Having popped clambered out of the previous level in the middle of the English Channel, Lara has driven her rubby dinghy onto the rocks of the French coast (throughout the Tomb Raider series, Lara displays quite poor driving skills!). The current has swept her inside a cave. Keep on swimming until Lara can surface for air and you should be near a set of stone steps leading upwards. Before climbing out of the water, dive down on to the green glowing section of cave bottom nearby to pick up the Hand of Rathmore. It's difficult to see, but an underwater flare helps.
Climb out of the water at the bottom of the steps and pick up a box of flares. Retreiving the Hand pf Rathmore opened a trapdoor at the top of the nearby ladder, enabling Lara to climb up into a typically French courtyard. It is one of the cafe areas inside a boutique zoo. Go through the doorway on the left, to another brick lined courtyard. Just inside on the right is a barred opening through which you can see the street beyond and a circular flower bed. At the far left of this area you should be able to make out a golden statue (of Joan of Arc - there are several in the town).
Pick up 2 boxes of shotgun shells from the 2 sunken stairwells near the half circle windows. When you take one of them you'll get a cut scene of 2 red cars speeding down the street outside (disappointingly, these cars are red herrings and never feature in the level!). Return to the first courtyard and continue to the left. In the next open area, there's a large gate through which you can see the street. Enter the area opposite the gate. On the left, at the bottom of the brick steps near the tiger cage, you'll find 2 more boxes of shells.
Go up the uneven steps under the painted zoo sign. As you do, two tigers charge down the steps to make a meal of Lara. Deal with them and then go to the top of the steps. Note the locked gates to the monkey house and the aviary but for now, climb onto the concrete ledge at the far end of this area from the highest point on the brick steps. There's a streetlight up here and a gap in the foliage on the right. Step through and drop into a trench to retrieve the Zoo Key. Climb out of the trench and drop back to the brick staircase. Use the key to unlock the monkey house.
Go down the stairs to a low ceilinged room with square pillars. Run through this area to the left to a paved area with benches and pick up the shotgun shells nearby. A brief cut scene shows some pesky monkeys making off with a small medikit beyond the barred opening. Retrace your steps slightly to the area with the square pillars and use the switch in the middle of the left wall to open the gate beyond the monkey cage. Go through the open gate and crawl through the low opening in the bushes.
Crawl around a couple of corners to find a large medikit. Crawl back to the gate and go to the right. Pick up some flares on the ground near the brick pedestal. You'll see a couple of tigers prowling around inthe bushes, but you can't get them yet. Climb onto the pedestal and up through the hole in the ceiling. You receive a cut scene at this point that is meant to show you an overhead view of the simple maze Lara just climbed into. Note the topiary on top of the hedges.
As soon as you take a step in the maze area, you'll meet the two tigers you saw earlier. This time they're hungry! Take them out but don't lose sight of the entrance hole. When the coast is clear, return there. Make sure that Lara is on the side of the hole that places a topiary shape to her right when her back is to the hole (look high in the air to see the topiary). Now head for the far side of the maze, keeping Lara's left shoulder to the hedge and climbing over one bench on the way.
Exit the maze into a covered passage. Go to the left and down a slope into the shrubbery section of the tiger cage. Continue through the shrubbery until you emerge in the barred cage itself and then pick up some Uzi clips. Retrace your steps through the shrubbery to the bottom of the ramp. Just to left of this is an opening concealed by leaves and a dangling vine.
Walk through the leaves and enter Secret #1. Climb up two ledges and then up a third on the left to emerge above the main street of the small French town. Another red car speeds down the street in a cut scene. Hop down to the street and take note of where Lara's standing - the way in is the only exit! Run to the right towards one of the golden statues and then head downhill, adding a sprint to cover some ground quickly.
On the right, near the bottom of the street, is a peach coloured house that juts out. Climb onto the ledge just in front of this on the right and grab the small medikit before the monkeys reach it. Jump back into the street and continue to the bottom, beyond the parked Citroen 2CV. Get the large medikit from the alcove on the left and take second look at the golden statue you saw earlier. Pick up 3 sets of MP5 clips on the cement ledge but don't loose your footing - it's a long drop!
When you take the clips near the corner, you get a wide angle view of the area below and may be able to spot a couple of lizard like creatures come down some stairs. Ignore these for now, as they quickly disappear and you'll be meeting them again (of course!). Return to the top of the hill and head for the golden statue. Check out the pedestal it's standing on to find a switch and throw it. It opens a trapdoor that you'll use much later on.
Climb back on the greenery covered ledge where you entered the town, return to the tiger enclosure and go up the ramp to the covered passageway. Re-enter the maze at the far end of the covered passage. You can see a carved bench just ahead of the entrance - run and jump up on that, so that you can kill the tiger that attacks from safety. Now continue through the maze leaving the bench on Lara's left. Take the next left and follow that passage until you reach a Y-junction. Go left there and continue on to the end.
Climb over the ledge into an open area with wooden walkways and bridges. Don't stop to admire the cage, as two monkeys are aiming to steal some goodies that you need to get to first. Shoot them. Now head over to the high walkway on the right and pick up the Aviary Key and grab a small medikit from a concrete ledge in the far left corner. Drop into the water below the walkways and swim around the underwater passages to pick up 3 pairs of grenades. Climb out of the water on the sloping stone ledge near the middle of the three circular windows.
Jump across to the wooden walkway and go right, to the corner. Look left to see another pair of grenades in an alcove just below the doorway where you entered. Take a diagonal running jump/grab from the walkway to the right of the white brick pillar to get them. Jump back into the water and return to the sloping ledge where you climbed out before. Return to the wooden walkway and climb up to the upper level. Go through the doorway opposite the one you entered through into a densely wooded area.
Walk carefully to the right end of the thick branch that Lara's standing on. It's a long way down and there are spikes below. You get a cut scene of a tiger when you get there and you can use the Uzis or MP5 to target the animal from up here. Jump straight up to grab the branches above you. Monkey swing forwards towards the far end of the room, bearing slightly left. Once you're hanging over the angled block, turn Lara to face to the right and drop onto it. Jump as you slide off the end and grab hold of the crevice in the wall. Shimmy to the right along the crevice as far as you can and then drop to land in a safe spot amid the spikes.
Walk Lara through the spikes to the right and go around the corner of the walkway to the clear area opposite an alcove containing some flares. Take a running jump from the walkway and grab the edge of the alcove. Haul up, get the flares and take a running jump back to the walkway. Continue along this to the left until you reach the next section of walkway that's clear of spikes. Safety drop off the ledge here and climb into the alcove in the corner to get some Uzi clips. Then climb the branch covered wall back up to the walkway.
Retrace your steps and head up the wooden stairs on the opposite end of the hall. Go through the doorway into a hall with steps leading upwards in both directions. Go up the stairs to the left and use the switch to open the gate. If the monkey grabs the small medikit on the pedestal before you do, follow him downstairs to see where he hides it: Down the stairs and just beyond the concrete cage floor is a large tree on the left. Behind it is a gree plant with broad leaves and behind this is the monkeys hiding place. Or you could decide to simply shoot the monkeys!
From the room with the low pedestal at the top of the stairs, go right through the brick floored hall with benches. At the far end of the hallway is a closed gate with a small courtyard beyond. This is a secret area, but you can't enter yet. Instead, go through the doorway on the right but don't jump over the slope: there are spikes down below! Instead, climb up the block on the left and ride the zip line down into the monkey habitat. The gate on the right side of the enclosure opens as you slide past.
The monkeys on the island will likely steal the small medikits while you catch your breath, but don't worry about that. Worry about the piranhas that are swimming in the lake instead. Walk carefully around the island and pick up 2 rockets before stopping by the small square pool near a large block under the zip line. Looking into the pool, you should see the second aviary key.
I always needed to take an underwater medikit on my dive for the key, as the piranhas come in very quickly and don't take long to devour poor Lara. Bearing that in mind, dive in and retrieve the key. climb out as quickly as you can. Make your way to the wooden walkway leading to the open gate (the other is closed at the moment).
Cross the walkway back to the forest area you've visited before and go around the big tree and behind the broad leaved plant to take back the medikits that the monkeys stole. Return to the two sets of stairs and go up the stairs to the left, as you did before. Go through the gate with the switch and continue to the end of the brick floored hallway. Go into the courtyard that was closed off before and pick up the large medikit and two sets of Desert Eagle ammo.
Leave the courtyard and go through the doorway on the left. climb up to the zip line and ride it back down to the little island. Use the switch on the cement block near the piranha pond to open the gate ahead. It is timed, so pull the switch, hop back and take a standing jump onto the top of the block. Now sprint to the gate and through. You're now back in the low ceilinged room near the monkey house entrance. Jump over the low wall ahead, go through the doorway and up the stairs to the courtyard outside. Head for the door to the aviary.
Use one of the Aviary keys to unlock the gate. Enter and step out onto the elevated walkway. Go around the first corner to the right and continue to the edge of the walkway. Shoot a vulture that pesters you, if you like and thenwalk off the walkway in front of the big tree ahead. You should land safely on flat ground - be careful not to step back onto the sloping edges of the little island - the water is teeming with piranhas!
Go behind the tree and climb the ladder on the back wall to a small room with shotgun shells, Desert Eagle ammo and Uzi clips. Climb back down the ladder to the ground. Turn around and come out from behind the tree on the right side. Through the walkway supports to Lara's right you'll see a green area with a fat looking palm tree. Take a running jump across the water between the bridge supports to land there. Pick up the shotgun shells on the ledge at the back of this area and return back to the first island the way you came.
Take a running jump from the small flat spot near the middle tree of the three to the small island with the first walkway support and some palm trees. Climb up onto the walkway there (by the tall palm tree). Go to the end of the winding walkway and kill 2 vultures that fly in from above. Take a standing jump from the end of the walkway to the square ledge with the small medikit.
Turn around and step off the very left side if this ledge to land on a flat spot at the base of the palm tree on the small island below. Turn around again, walk to the edge of the island and jump straight up to grab the ladder made of branches. climb to the top. Walk to the right end of the ledge and take a standing jump to the leafy triangular ledge ahead and slightly to the right.
From the corner of this area, take a standing jump, pressing [Action] to lower Lara's arc, to the green ledge below the metal arch. Pick up the shotgun shells and crawl under the arch and out onto the other side of the ledge. From there, take a running jump to the top of the carved white pillar below the zip line handle. Kill a vulture flying in from below.
Duck under the zip line running over this column and take a running jump to the green ledge on the other side of the room. Walk to the top of the hill near the blue brick wall to get some grenades. There's nothing else up here, despite the expanse of rock nearby, so return back to the white column with a running jump and prepare to ride that zip line into the next area.
At the lower end of the zip line you'll find yourself back in the back streets of the little French town. Explore the area and use the second Aviary key in the lock on the side of the base of the nearby golden statue. This opens a gate near the first golden statue that you haven't yet been able to reach. Wander through the town, noting the deep hole in the ground (but avoiding it!) and look for a passage in the stone wall on the right. Climb up and follow it.
At the end of the passage you'll find youself standing in front of that elusive golden statue. Since you used the lever on the side of the statue in the main square of the French town, the trapdoor at the base of the statue will be open. Have Lara drop in and note the chime for a secret when she starts walking down the steps.
Secret #3. Jump the gap above the green toxic stuff and pick up the flares. Go down to the next block and over another gap to get a rocket. Walk down to the lowest step for a second rocket. Go to the left side of the ledge, where you can see a ladder on the wall on the other side of the reen gloop. Take a running jump to grab the ladder. Climb down until Lara's hands are two rungs below the top of the sparkling vapour and then backflip to land in an alcove behind her. Pick up another rocket.
Take a running jump from the alcove to grab the ladder. Climb up until Lara's hands are just below the level of the hanging rock on the left. Backflip onto the ledge where you started. Go to the other side of this ledge and hop down through the sparkling vapour into a safe (ordinary rock - not sparkling) area below. There are 3 lizard mutants running around on the shore outside the cave. Use the rocket launcher on the first two but the third will probably hide until you slide down the rocks and hit the beach.
Don't get too close to the mutants as their breath is poisonous. Use a medikit as an antidote to poison if Lara's hea;th bar starts to turn yellow. After killing the lizards, pick up the 2 large medikits on the iron vents in the middle of the beach. Taking one of these causes 2 more lizard mutants to charge in. Kill them and then climb the large rock blocks on the left side of the beach to the opening above. Safety drop into the next room.
Go around the first pool. The suspended mutants are creepy but only set decoration and needn't trouble you or Lara. Climb up onto the low ledge for a bit of a shock and then approach the pool with the corpse suspended below Lara's level. This corpse has a huge hole in it's chest just begging for something to fill it but continue past this sight and go up the stairs nearby to get some flares. Take care not to fall into the spakling gloop.
The remaining steps (over the gap) lead back to the French town and are the entrance into this section for those unfortunates who didn't pick up the third secret. Return to the pool with the decaying corpse and take a standing jump down onto the translucent platform in front of the body. Save your game and then place the Hand of Rathmore into the corpse's chest to end the level.
